Dear Sisters and Brothers,
Today, at 5:30, I will be attending the wake for our beloved sister and long term AFSCME 3506 Vice President, Althea (Torchie) Hawkins. She has left us in deep sorrow. She brightened our lives for decades, and now she has simply departed.
Albert Einstein said, “The value of a man should be seen in what he gives and not in what he is able to receive.” Althea was a strong woman, a scholar of history and also a union fighter; she made many tough-talking administrators think and act carefully before challenging her. Surely, she gave much in her lifetime.
Torchy gave much as a teacher, as a leader, and as a mentor. Her life was a life of passion for teaching, for her coworkers, for scholarship and, more than anything else, for her family.
Her life burned bright so that others’ paths would be lit. She is gone and has left us broken-hearted. Our sorrow is lessened only slightly because we had the privilege to know her. I’ll miss her mentoring, her pushing me to excel, and her correcting me on my Greek history. She will be missed, but she will not be forgotten.
God bless you ALL!
